Whale Watching and a Dip in the Pacific
Our whale watching morning was one of the standout moments of the entire trip. We booked through a local operator we found at the marina, and the boat was small enough that we were never far from the action.
The combination of open Pacific water, humpback whale sightings, and the chance to actually swim in the ocean mid-tour is hard to beat. Our guide was knowledgeable about whale migration patterns and pointed out dolphins alongside the whales.
Panama is one of the top destinations for an unforgettable whale-watching tour in the Pacific Ocean. We went for a four-hour adventure, priced at $125 per person, and not just witnessed majestic whales but also got an opportunity to dive into the Pacific Ocean’s refreshing waters. If you’re looking for more adventures in Panama, this is a must-try!
We recommend booking the morning departure to get the calmest water and the best light for photos. The swim in the Pacific at the halfway point was a complete surprise and one of the highlights of our nine days in Panama.

Visit Monkey Island Panama for an up-close experience with different species of monkeys and biodiversity in the region, followed by a visit to an indigenous village. For $125 per adult, spend five hours surrounded by the playful antics of monkeys, feed them, and immerse yourself in the rich culture of Panama’s indigenous communities with a visit to the Rainforest and local shopping from the indigenous tribe. A trip to Monkey Island Panama is one of the must-do activities on your list!
The indigenous village visit at the end of the Monkey Island tour was the part we did not expect to love as much as we did. The community demonstrated traditional craft-making, and we picked up handmade souvenirs that felt far more meaningful than anything from a city shop.
Tour type: boat-based day tour departing from Panama City.

We spent an afternoon eating our way through the local market near the old town and tried ceviche, carimañolas (fried yuca stuffed with meat), and fresh coconut water. Panama’s food scene is underrated and worth dedicating proper time to.
Self-guided city tours: start from Casco Viejo and walk toward the Amador Causeway.
Local markets: Mercado de Mariscos (seafood market) is a short drive from Casco Viejo.
Confirm market opening hours locally before visiting.

Additional Highlight: Go for a Flying Dress Photoshoot
The Flying Dress photoshoot was genuinely one of the most fun two hours of the entire trip. We were both sceptical beforehand, but the combination of the Casco Viejo backdrop, the dramatic dress, and the professional photographer meant the photos turned out far better than we expected.
If you are travelling as a couple or with a group, this is the kind of shared experience that becomes a story you tell for years. The Trikers team handled everything and made the whole session easy and relaxed.
For those seeking a unique and memorable experience, consider a Flying Dress Photoshoot with Trikers. For $250, this package includes not only the rental of the dress but also the services of a professional photographer. Capture the essence of Panama forever.
Book the Flying Dress session in the late afternoon for the golden hour light over the Casco Viejo rooftops. We went mid-morning and the light was fine, but later in the day would have been even more spectacular based on what we saw other groups producing.
Location: Casco Viejo, Panama City, Panama.
Admission: from USD $250 per session (includes dress rental and professional photographer, as of our visit).
Booking: reserve through Trikers Panama or similar operators in Casco Viejo.

Best Time to Visit Panama City
The dry season runs from mid-December through April and is the most popular time to visit. Skies are reliably clear, temperatures sit around 30C, and outdoor activities such as whale watching and boat tours operate with fewer cancellations. Crowds are at their highest from January to March, so book accommodation and tours early if you plan to travel in this window. From May through July the rainy season begins, but Panama City rarely experiences all-day downpours. Rain typically falls in the late afternoon, leaving mornings and evenings free for sightseeing. We visited in the shoulder season and found the city quieter, prices lower, and the rainforest noticeably more lush and vibrant for the Monkey Island tour. August and September bring heavier rainfall and mark the peak of the Pacific whale watching season, which runs roughly from July through October. If seeing humpback whales is your priority, planning around this window is worthwhile even with the wetter conditions. October through November can be the wettest months, but the city continues to function normally and indoor attractions such as the Biomuseo and the Miraflores Visitor Centre remain fully accessible.Things to Do in Panama City by Neighbourhood
- Casco Viejo (Old City): The UNESCO-listed historic quarter is where most first-time visitors spend the majority of their time in Panama City. Cobblestone streets, brightly painted colonial buildings, rooftop bars, and the starting point for the Slingshot tour and Flying Dress photoshoot all sit within this compact neighbourhood. We recommend spending at least a full half-day here.
- Miraflores and the Panama Canal: The Miraflores Visitor Centre sits about 15 minutes from the city centre and gives you elevated views of ships transiting the canal locks. The on-site museum explains the history of the canal construction. Entry costs around USD $22 for adults and the viewing platforms are outstanding for photography.
- Amador Causeway: This three-kilometre road built from rock excavated during canal construction links three small islands to the mainland. It is an ideal spot for a sunset walk or cycle ride with views of the Panama City skyline and the Pacific entrance to the canal. The Biomuseo, designed by Frank Gehry, sits at the end of the causeway.
- Albrook and the Market Area: The large Mercado de Artesanias near Albrook offers handicrafts and souvenirs from across Panama’s indigenous communities. Combined with the nearby Mercado de Mariscos for fresh ceviche, this part of the city gives a grounded, local feel away from the tourist-heavy Casco Viejo.
- Modern Business District (Punta Pacifica and Marbella): Panama City has a strikingly modern skyline that surprises many first-time visitors expecting only colonial architecture. The high-rise restaurant and bar scene here is excellent for evenings, and the Multicentro Mall area gives access to international food chains and pharmacies if you need practical supplies.
Free and No-Reservation Things to Do in Panama City
Panama City has more free options than most visitors realise going in. Casco Viejo itself is entirely walkable at no cost, and simply spending a few hours wandering the streets, sitting in the main plaza, and looking up at the architecture is a genuinely rewarding experience. The waterfront promenade along the old town costs nothing and offers great views of the modern skyline across the bay. The Amador Causeway is free to walk or cycle along and provides some of the best city views without paying for any attraction. We walked the full length at sunset on our first evening and it set the tone for the whole trip. Bicycles are available to rent from stalls along the causeway entrance for a small fee if you prefer to cycle. The exterior of the Miraflores Locks and the canal approach is visible from a public viewpoint before you reach the ticketed visitor centre. While the museum and elevated viewing platforms require entry, watching a large ship in the canal from the road is free and remarkable. We suggest visiting the paid Visitor Centre at least once, but if budget is tight, the roadside viewpoint still delivers a memorable canal moment.Tips for Visiting Panama City with Kids or Toddlers
Monkey Island is genuinely one of the best family-friendly activities we can think of in all of Central America. Children love feeding the monkeys at close range, and the boat journey to and from the island is exciting in itself. The five-hour duration is manageable for most kids old enough to sit on a boat, and operators are experienced in handling family groups. Casco Viejo has wide plazas where kids can run around freely, and the flat streets are pushchair-friendly in most sections. The waterfront area near the old town gives children space to move without the risk of busy traffic. Ice cream vendors are scattered throughout the neighbourhood, which helps considerably with toddler cooperation. The Biomuseo at the Amador Causeway is an excellent option for families with older children, with interactive exhibits covering Panama’s natural history and its role as a land bridge connecting North and South America. For overnight stays with children, choosing accommodation close to Casco Viejo saves significant taxi time between morning activities. Planning a trip to Belize with the family? What is Panama City best known for?
Panama City is best known for the Panama Canal, one of the most important waterways in the world. The city is also famous for its UNESCO-listed historic district Casco Viejo, a strikingly modern skyline, easy access to rainforest wildlife, whale watching in the Pacific, and its status as a major international travel hub.
Is Panama City, Panama safe for tourists?
Panama City is generally safe in the main tourist areas including Casco Viejo, Miraflores, and the Amador Causeway. Visitors should avoid the area known locally as El Chorrillo and take standard precautions at night. Casco Viejo has improved significantly in recent years and is busy with tourists and locals throughout the day.
What is a must do in Panama?
Visiting the Panama Canal at the Miraflores Visitor Centre is widely considered the single must-do experience. Beyond that, a whale watching tour in the Pacific, the Monkey Island and indigenous village tour, and exploring Casco Viejo on foot are the experiences that most visitors remember longest.
Do you need $500 to enter Panama?
Panama immigration law technically requires visitors to show proof of sufficient funds, often cited as USD $500, or a valid credit card. In practice this is rarely enforced at the airport for Canadian or US passport holders, but carrying a credit card or some cash is sensible standard travel preparation.
What is the red zone in Panama City?
The red zone refers to El Chorrillo, a neighbourhood situated near Casco Viejo that is considered higher risk for tourists. Sticking to the main tourist districts during the day and using taxis or rideshare apps after dark keeps most visitors well away from this area without any need for concern.
What should I do in Panama City during a layover?
Panama City is one of the best layover destinations in the Americas. Tocumen International Airport is roughly 25 to 30 minutes from the city centre. With three to four hours you can see the Miraflores Locks at the canal. With a full day, add Casco Viejo and a meal at the seafood market. We recommend a rideshare app rather than a formal taxi for the fastest and most affordable transfer.
