A Scenic Gondola Ride to Your Room

Your adventure begins with a scenic gondola ride that whisks you up the mountain to your lodge. Every day, you’ll float above alpine forests and sweeping valleys before arriving at your private mountain top sanctuary.

At Sunshine Mountain Lodge, the journey itself is part of the magic.

We rode the gondola on a clear August morning and the views over the Sunshine Meadows were extraordinary. The ride takes approximately 20 minutes, and we genuinely recommend arriving at the base early to catch the first gondola of the day.

If you are extending your Alberta road trip, the Icefields Parkway is one of the most spectacular scenic drives on the continent and connects Banff directly to Jasper.

Best Time to Visit Sunshine Mountain Lodge

Spring (April to June): Spring at Sunshine Village can still mean excellent ski conditions, particularly in April and May when the resort typically runs its longest season. By June, the mountain begins its transition to summer mode, and we found late spring to be surprisingly good for fewer crowds while still catching snow.

Summer (July to August): Summer is a magical time at Sunshine Mountain Lodge. The Sunshine Meadows open for hiking and the free chairlift takes you to some of the most accessible alpine terrain in Canada. We visited in August and the wildflower meadows were in full bloom, making the trails feel almost impossibly beautiful.

Fall (September to October): Early fall brings the first hints of snow to the high alpine areas and the mountain begins preparing for the ski season. Lodge operations may transition between seasons during this period, so we recommend contacting the hotel directly to confirm availability before booking a fall stay.

Winter (December to March): Winter is when Sunshine Mountain Lodge truly shines. The resort receives some of the deepest, lightest powder in the Rockies, and skiing directly from your room makes the experience unlike any other ski holiday we have had. The Christmas and New Year period books out very quickly, so plan well in advance.

How to Get to Sunshine Mountain Lodge

Sunshine Mountain Lodge is accessible only via the gondola at Sunshine Village. From Banff townsite, drive west along Highway 1 and follow the signs to Sunshine Village, approximately 9 kilometres from town. The Sunshine Village base parking lot has ample space for day visitors and lodge guests. Hotel guests board the gondola at the base and ride approximately 20 minutes up to the lodge. We recommend arriving at the base with enough time to check in before the final gondola of the day, and the hotel team is very helpful with logistics if you contact them before your arrival.

Sunshine Mountain Lodge Banff by Area

Rooms and Suites

The rooms at Sunshine Mountain Lodge range from standard hotel rooms to larger suites with separate living areas. We stayed in a mountain-view room and the views from the window were the first thing we saw every morning. The rooms are modern, well-heated, and designed for comfort after a full day outdoors. The sunshine mountain lodge prices vary by season, with peak ski season commanding premium rates that reflect the truly unique access the property offers.

Dining and Breakfast

The sunshine mountain lodge restaurant serves both hotel guests and day visitors during peak periods. The dining room is warm and inviting, and the sunshine mountain lodge breakfast is a genuine highlight of any stay. We had a full cooked breakfast each morning and appreciated the hearty portions designed to fuel a day on the mountain.

Spa and Wellness

The sunshine mountain lodge spa offers treatments designed around relaxation and recovery after a full day on the mountain. After skiing or a long hike, we found an afternoon at the spa to be the ideal way to unwind. The outdoor hot tubs are available to hotel guests and provide stunning mountain views in every direction.

Outdoor Access

In winter, the slopes are literally your front yard. In summer, the Sunshine Meadows offer hiking trails that start right outside the lodge door. We walked out of the hotel in our hiking boots and were on the trail within minutes, which is a rare luxury for mountain travel in Canada.

Free and No-Reservation Options

Not all of the Sunshine Mountain Lodge experience requires a reservation. Day visitors can ride the gondola to the mountain during operating periods, and in summer the Sunshine Meadows hiking trails are accessible without booking a room. The chairlift that operates in summer for hikers is included as part of the gondola ticket.

For those who want to experience the mountain without an overnight stay, a day visit during summer alpine season is a genuinely rewarding option. We would recommend booking your gondola ticket in advance during peak summer periods, as availability can be limited on busy days in July and August.

Budget-conscious travellers should also note that much of the natural scenery around Sunshine Village sits within Banff National Park, which requires a parks pass but does not charge separately for access to the alpine meadows themselves. A day hiking pass is a cost-effective way to experience the mountain before committing to an overnight stay. Tips for Visiting with Kids or Toddlers

Sunshine Mountain Lodge is a genuinely family-friendly option in Banff, and we would encourage families with children to consider both the summer and winter seasons. In winter, the ski school at Sunshine Village is well-regarded and operates from the base area before guests take the gondola up. Children learning to ski have access to dedicated beginner terrain close to the village at the top.

In summer, the hiking trails in the Sunshine Meadows range from easy walks suitable for older children to more moderate hikes for families with active kids. We recommend sticking to the meadow-level trails with younger children and saving the ridgeline routes for older or more experienced hikers.

Pack layers regardless of the season. The lodge sits above 2,000 metres in elevation and temperatures can drop quickly, even in summer. For families planning a broader Canadian adventure, our guide to wildlife in Canada covers the animals you are most likely to encounter in and around Banff National Park, which makes for excellent preparation before a family trip.
