Corn is where the Herrle’s story began: in 1964, Howard and Elsie Herrle started growing a few acres of sweet corn and selling it from their garage. Our tip is to cook it the same day you buy it, since Herrle’s harvests its sweet corn daily during the season.

When we checked Herrle’s updates this season, they listed three varieties: Montauk, a bicolour corn described as sweet and tender, Vision, a very sweet yellow corn with a longer shelf life, and Gourmet Sweet, another bicolour variety. We like buying a mix so we can taste the difference at dinner.

Best Time to Visit Herrle’s
Spring
Local sweet corn is not in season in spring, since Foodland Ontario lists it from July through October. Herrle’s posts its seasonal opening updates on its Latest News page, so we would check there before planning a spring drive.
Summer
Summer is when Herrle’s really comes alive. Pick-your-own strawberries open when the berries are ripe, around late June, and sweet corn follows in July. Summer weekends are the busiest time, so we like to go early in the day for the best selection.
Fall
Ontario sweet corn can still be found into September and October, and this is when apples, pears and pumpkins take over the market. Herrle’s has posted that it is open on Thanksgiving Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., which makes it an easy holiday weekend stop.
Winter
