Good Family Pumpkins : A 60-Year Family Tradition

fall activities in Waterloo

Just outside Waterloo lies Good Family Pumpkins, a beloved fall destination that’s been run by the Good family for decades. Known for 120+ varieties of pumpkins, squash, and gourds, this place is perfect for photo ops, pumpkin picking, and soaking in that seasonal charm.

It’s not just about picking the perfect pumpkin, Good Family also emphasizes their roots, growing everything on-site and keeping things local and authentic.

We always make a point of stopping here in late September when the roadside stand is absolutely overflowing with unusual varieties you simply cannot find at any grocery store. Our favourites are the ghost pumpkins and the tiny ornamental gourds that look almost too good to carve.

Fall Harvest Farm : Rustic Charm Meets Local Goodness

fall activities in Waterloo

About 20 minutes from Kitchener-Waterloo, Fall Harvest Farm is a local gem that has been delighting families for over 30 years.

In autumn, the farm bursts into fall life:

  • Over 30 varieties of pumpkins and squash fill the fields and market stands.
  • Their farm market offers fresh produce, local goods, jams, and more to support regional farmers.
  • The displays and farm decor in fall make it a favorite backdrop for photos and seasonal vibes.

Fall Harvest is open daily until Halloween, making it easy to plan a weekend visit.

We love the drive out to Fall Harvest Farm almost as much as the farm itself. The back roads through St. Agatha turn absolutely spectacular in October, and we always arrive back home with far more squash than we planned to buy.

Address: 1011 Gerber Rd, St. Agatha, ON N0B 2L0

Hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm (closed Mondays during the fall season)

Best Time to Visit Waterloo Region

Spring is a quiet time to visit the region, with farm markets reopening from June onward and the countryside coming back to life. Crowds are minimal and the countryside roads are peaceful, making it a great season for a relaxed drive with no fixed itinerary.

Summer brings full activity to the farm markets, with fresh produce, corn, and berries on offer. We find weekday visits much less busy than weekends, and the markets are at their most colourful peak in July and August.

Fall is without question the best season to visit for the experiences in this guide. September through late October is peak pumpkin season, the foliage is stunning, and the farm energy is at its warmest. We always plan our visit for early to mid-October when everything is open and the weather is still comfortable.

Winter closes most of the farms and outdoor attractions, but the region’s restaurants and indoor venues stay open year-round. If you want to keep exploring Ontario once the farms close, our guide to places to visit in Ontario in winter has plenty of ideas to carry you through the cold months.

Fall Activities in Waterloo Region by Area

Waterloo Region covers a large area and the experience can differ depending on where you focus your day. Here is how we break it down:

  • Fall activities in Waterloo city: Good Family Pumpkins sits just east of Waterloo city and is the most convenient farm stop. The city also offers walkable areas, parks, and proximity to the University of Waterloo campus, which looks spectacular in full fall colour.
  • Fall activities in Kitchener: Moose Winooski’s is based in Kitchener and makes a perfect base for the day. The Kitchener Market runs year-round and has excellent fall produce vendors in season.
  • Fall activities in Cambridge: Cambridge sits at the southern edge of the region and offers scenic river trails perfect for a fall walk. The historic downtown area along the Grand River is particularly beautiful in autumn.
  • Fall activities in St. Jacobs: St. Jacobs is famous for its year-round farmers market and Mennonite heritage. In fall, the surrounding countryside and farm roads are among the most scenic in the whole region for leaf-peeping drives.
  • Fall activities in Elmira and St. Agatha: Fall Harvest Farm sits in St. Agatha and the drive through Elmira to reach it takes you through countryside that is at its absolute best in October. We always add an extra 30 minutes just to take the long route.

Free and No-Reservation Fall Activities in Waterloo Region

One of the things we love most about fall in Waterloo Region is that many of the best experiences cost nothing to access. Good Family Pumpkins charges no entrance fee at all. You simply park, browse the roadside stand, and pay only for what you take home. The same applies to Fall Harvest Farm, where the market is open with no ticket required and no advance booking needed.

Scenic drives through the countryside roads surrounding St. Jacobs, Elmira, and St. Agatha are entirely free and in our opinion some of the most rewarding fall activities in the region. Pack a thermos and take the back roads at your own pace.

The Grand River trails in Cambridge and the parks throughout Waterloo city are free to access year-round. In fall they offer some of the best urban leaf-peeping in Ontario without any need to plan ahead or book in advance. We recommend visiting on a weekday morning to have the trails largely to yourself.

Tips for Visiting with Kids or Toddlers

Waterloo Region is genuinely one of the most family-friendly fall destinations in Ontario and the farms are well set up for young visitors. Both Good Family Pumpkins and Fall Harvest Farm are entirely outdoors, which means strollers work well on the flat gravel lots but may struggle on uneven grass or field areas. We recommend a carrier for toddlers once you leave the parking lot.

Dress kids in layers and bring a spare change of clothes. Farm visits have a way of ending up muddier than expected, especially after any rain. Rubber boots for kids are genuinely worth the effort for any farm visit in fall.

Moose Winooski’s has a kids menu and high chairs available, making it a practical lunch or dinner stop with little ones after a farm morning. We always find it easier to visit the farms first and eat afterward when the kids are tired and happy to sit still.
