We bought a bag to eat at the picnic deck by the millpond and ended up going back in for a second. The wood-fired pizzas use flour milled on-site, which gives them a flavour you simply cannot replicate anywhere else.

Spring (March to May): Spring is a peaceful time to drive this route. Archibald’s orchard begins to bloom in April and the countryside between Hampton and Bowmanville is genuinely beautiful with wildflowers along the back roads. Jungle Cat World is open year-round so there are no concerns about access, and crowds are noticeably lighter than in fall. Weather can be unpredictable so we recommend checking conditions before you head out.
Summer (June to August): Summer brings warmer days and longer evenings, making it ideal for spending extra time at the Archibald’s orchard or having a picnic at Tyrone Mill’s millpond deck. Jungle Cat World is at its most active during summer and the animals are generally more visible in good weather. Families with young children tend to love the summer visits since all outdoor activities are fully open. We suggest arriving early on weekends as parking fills up.
Fall (September to November): This is absolutely our favourite season for this ontario road trip and we would argue it is the best time for most visitors too. Knox’s Pumpkin Farm opens in mid-September and runs through the end of October, the apple picking at Archibald’s is in full swing, and the foliage along the country roads is spectacular. Weekends in October are busiest. If you can visit on a weekday you will have a noticeably more relaxed experience.
Winter (December to February): Winter is a quieter option and has its own charm. Knox’s runs a Christmas market on weekends in December and Jungle Cat World stays open weather permitting through the season. Tyrone Mill is open year-round so you can always count on a warm cider donut at the end of a cold drive. We recommend calling ahead in January and February to confirm conditions before making the journey.
Ontario Road Trip Stops by Area in Durham Region
- Hampton and Clarington (northern loop): Knox’s Pumpkin Farm is the anchor of this area and sits on a quiet country road just north of Courtice. This is the ideal morning starting point. The roads between Hampton and Orono pass through some of the most scenic farmland in the region, making the drive itself part of the experience.
- Orono (midday stop): Jungle Cat World sits just north of the village of Orono along Highway 35 and 115. The village itself has a handful of boutique shops and an antique market worth a quick browse before or after your wildlife park visit. Free and No-Reservation Options on This Route
One of the things we genuinely appreciate about this durham road trip route is how many stops require no advance booking and no admission fee. Archibald’s Estate Winery is free to visit and the complimentary wine tasting is included with your visit at no extra charge. Tyrone Mill also has no admission fee. You can walk into the historic building, browse the farm store, grab a donut and sit on the deck by the millpond without spending anything beyond what you choose to buy.
Jungle Cat World does charge admission but does not require advance reservations for general visits. You can simply arrive at the gate and purchase tickets on the day. The guided feeding tour at 1:30 pm is included with your general admission. The only experiences that require advance booking are the Behind the Scenes programs and the Safari Lodge overnight stays, which we strongly recommend planning well ahead if they interest you.
Knox’s Pumpkin Farm charges admission, and in recent seasons pre-purchased online tickets have been recommended, particularly for October weekends which are the busiest. We always recommend checking the farm’s website before your visit to confirm whether walk-ins are available on your chosen date. That said, even at peak times the experience is worth every dollar of the admission fee, and the kettle corn alone is reason enough to go.
Tips for Visiting with Kids or Toddlers
This entire route is genuinely excellent for families with young children. Knox’s Pumpkin Farm has a dedicated mini-maze for toddlers, pony rides on weekends, a straw jump area, and farm animals at every turn. We recommend packing a change of clothes for little ones since the farm can get muddy after rain and little kids have a way of finding every puddle on the property.
At Jungle Cat World, children under three are admitted free and the park is manageable on foot for families with strollers. There is a natural playground area inside the park and the domestic free-roaming animals, including rabbits, alpacas, and donkeys, are a massive hit with toddlers who may not yet be ready to stand still in front of a tiger enclosure. The guided feeding tour at 1:30 pm is also perfectly suited to young visitors.
Tyrone Mill’s deck area by the millpond is a relaxed spot for kids to run around while adults enjoy a coffee and a donut.
