Bent Taco puts a modern spin on traditional Mexican cuisine, making it a must-visit for taco lovers looking for something different.
We made Bent Taco a stop on a ski weekend in Collingwood and the Baja fish tacos quickly became a favourite, crispy, tangy, and exactly what we needed after a day on the slopes. Reservations are strongly recommended as this place fills up fast, especially on weekends.

Our Favourite Mexican Food Moments Across Ontario
Ontario’s Mexican food scene has surprised us at every turn. When we first moved to Canada, we honestly did not expect to find this level of variety and authenticity outside of major cities, but the province keeps proving us wrong. From roadside taco stands to inventive chef-driven menus, the range of what is available here reflects how diverse and food-forward Ontario has become.
One of our favourite discoveries has been how many Ontario restaurants are doing birria tacos properly, slow-braised beef or lamb, dipped in consomme and griddled until crispy. Places like Madre de Lobo in Toronto and Contigo in Mississauga have made this dish a staple worth seeking out. If you have never tried birria, consider this your sign.
Best Time to Visit Mexican Restaurants in Ontario
Spring (March to May) is one of our favourite times to explore Ontario’s food scene. Restaurants are less crowded than in peak summer, patio season is just starting, and spots like La Condesa in Prince Edward County are opening up after any winter closures. We find it easier to walk in without a long wait during this shoulder season.
Summer (June to August) is peak season across Ontario, particularly in cottage country and Prince Edward County. Places like La Condesa can have long wait times on summer weekends and Bent Taco in Collingwood fills up quickly after Blue Mountain visitors arrive. We always recommend checking walk-in waitlists online or calling ahead during July and August.
Fall (September to November) is arguably the best time to visit PEC and the Collingwood area. Crowds thin out, the weather is still pleasant for patio dining, and the seasonal menus at spots like La Condesa often feature harvest ingredients. We have had some of our best meals in this region during the fall shoulder season.
Winter (December to February) is the time to focus on Toronto and GTA spots that stay open year-round. Madre de Lobo on King Street West and Contigo in Mississauga are great winter options. Bent Taco has reduced hours in winter so we always verify before making the drive up to Collingwood.
Best Mexican Restaurants in Ontario by Area
Toronto (King West, Parkdale, Distillery District)
Toronto has the widest variety of Mexican restaurants in Ontario, from casual taquerias to full-service dining with live entertainment. We recommend Madre de Lobo on King Street West for evenings out. The Distillery District and Kensington Market also have strong options worth exploring on foot.
Mississauga and the Western GTA
Mississauga’s Millcreek corridor has a growing cluster of authentic spots. Contigo is our go-to for a relaxed weeknight meal with excellent tacos at accessible prices. Burro in Burlington is also a short drive away and pairs well with a visit to Spencer Smith Park along the waterfront.
Collingwood and the Blue Mountain Area
Bent Taco in Collingwood is the standout in this region and worth building a weekend trip around. We recommend pairing it with a ski day in winter or a hike in summer. The town itself is walkable and the restaurant is steps from the main strip.
Prince Edward County
La Condesa in Wellington is the only Mexican restaurant we know of in PEC that we would actively drive two hours for. It sits right on Wellington Main Street, moments from the Drake Devonshire and local wineries, making it an easy addition to any County itinerary.
Walk-In and No-Reservation Options
Not every Ontario Mexican restaurant requires advance booking, which is good news for spontaneous plans. Contigo in Mississauga operates as a fast-casual counter-service spot, meaning you simply walk in, order, and find a table. We have shown up on Saturday afternoons without any plan and been seated immediately.
La Condesa in Wellington officially does not take traditional reservations and operates on a walk-in waitlist system. You can join the waitlist remotely via their website before you arrive, which effectively acts as a virtual queue. We recommend joining 30 to 45 minutes before you want to eat, especially on summer weekends.
For Toronto visits, Madre de Lobo takes OpenTable reservations but also accommodates walk-ins at the bar on quieter weeknights. If you are visiting on a Thursday through Sunday, booking ahead is strongly recommended. Bent Taco and Burro both take reservations and we always suggest pre-booking, especially for groups.
Tips for Visiting with Kids or Toddlers
Mexican food is generally well suited to dining with children because of the variety of mild options alongside spicier dishes. At Contigo in Mississauga, the counter-service format works well with kids as there is no long wait for a server and children can see and choose their food more easily. The hot sauce bar is labelled by heat level, so it is easy to avoid anything too spicy for little ones.
Bent Taco in Collingwood has an outdoor patio which gives kids more space to move around between courses. We find patio seating at casual Mexican spots generally more relaxed for families. Burro in Burlington is fully gluten-free, which is worth knowing if you are managing any dietary restrictions in your group.
For longer Ontario road trips with children, we recommend planning meals around the drive rather than making a restaurant a destination in itself. A stop at Contigo or Burro works well as a midpoint on a trip to Niagara or PEC. If you are planning an overnight stay in the region, browse our North Ontario itinerary for a tested family-friendly route.
