Experience the magic of Cottage Creators, a stunning treehouse cottage perched on the shores of one of Muskoka’s most beautiful lakes. With breathtaking views from every room and a location that feels like a fairytale, this enchanting retreat is sure to steal your heart.

We were not expecting to feel genuinely emotional arriving at a treehouse, but the views over the lake from the main deck stopped us both in our tracks. Utterson is one of the quieter pockets of Muskoka and that is part of what makes this spot special.

Muskoka is widely considered the best cottage country in Ontario. See our Ontario resorts and getaways guide for more options in the region.

Experience the beauty of California without leaving Ontario at Beach House Niagara. With stunning beach views, private beach access, and a host of amenities including an indoor hot tub and billiards table, this Airbnb is the perfect spot for a group getaway.

We took a group of six friends here and the billiards table and hot tub combination meant we barely left the property. The private beach access in the Niagara region is genuinely rare and makes this one stand out from typical Ontario cottage rentals.

Whether you’re sledding in the winter or canoeing in the summer, this pet-friendly retreat has something for everyone.

The lakeside cabin on this property is the detail that sets it apart. We used it as a reading nook in the morning and it felt like having two separate retreats in one booking. The jacuzzi after a winter sledding session is an experience we recommend to everyone.

Best Time to Visit Ontario Cottage Country

Spring (April to May) is a quieter and often underrated time to visit Ontario’s cottage areas. Many properties open from late April and the wildflower season in Muskoka and Haliburton is genuinely beautiful. We have visited in May and found crowds minimal and prices noticeably lower than summer rates. Summer (June to August) is peak season across all the best cottage areas in ontario, with warm lake temperatures, long daylight hours, and the full range of water activities. Book well in advance, especially for July and August long weekends, as the most popular properties in Muskoka and the Kawarthas fill months ahead. Autumn (September to October) is our personal favourite time to visit cottage country. The fall foliage across Haliburton Highlands and Muskoka is spectacular, crowds drop significantly after Labour Day, and many properties offer lower rates. The Highlands Hideaway dome in particular was unforgettable in October. Winter (November to March) is a hidden gem for the right traveller. Arrowhead Provincial Park near Huntsville offers ice skating and snowshoeing, and properties like The Wood House Muskoka are set up for sledding and fireside evenings. We recommend it for couples looking for a quiet escape from the city.

Best Cottage Areas in Ontario by Region

  • Muskoka: The most iconic cottage country region in Ontario, known for deep clear lakes, charming towns like Bracebridge and Huntsville, and a mix of grand historic cottages and modern luxury rentals. Wolegib Muskoka, Cottage Creators in Utterson, and The Wood House are all set in this region.
  • Kawarthas: A more accessible option from Toronto, the Kawarthas offer a warm, shallow lake system ideal for families with young children. Kawartha Lakes cottage rentals tend to be more affordable than Muskoka, making this region a favourite for first-time cottage visitors.
  • Haliburton Highlands: Known for dramatic rocky terrain, deep lakes, and arts community towns like Haliburton village, this region is one of the best places for cottages in ontario if you want a quieter, less commercial experience. The Highlands Hideaway dome sits in this region.
  • Georgian Bay and Parry Sound: The rugged 30,000 Islands area around Georgian Bay is unlike anywhere else in Ontario cottage country. The scenery is dramatic and the boating culture here is a unique part of the experience. Good for adventurous travellers and those looking for places like Muskoka but less visited.
  • Prince Edward County: A wine country and beach destination as much as a cottage area, PEC has become one of the most sought-after cottage regions in Ontario over the past decade. The Cottage by Callisto in nearby Brighton gives easy access to the county’s best beaches and wineries.
  • Bruce Peninsula: Home to the Grotto, Tobermory, and Sauble Beach, the Bruce Peninsula is one of the most dramatically beautiful cottage areas in Ontario. Highview Beachhouse is our pick here, with easy access to both the beach and the national park trails.

Free and No-Reservation Options in Ontario Cottage Country

Not every great experience in Ontario cottage country requires a booking. Many of the best days we have had on our cottage trips started with a spontaneous stop at a provincial park day-use area or a public beach. Ontario Parks charges a per-vehicle day-use fee at most provincial parks but no reservation is required for day visits at many locations, including Presqu’ile Provincial Park near Brighton. Public beaches in the Kawarthas, along Georgian Bay, and on the Bruce Peninsula are free to access and do not require any advance planning. Sauble Beach, just 20 minutes from Highview Beachhouse, is one of the longest freshwater beaches in the world and has no admission fee. Tobermory’s harbour area and the Chi-Cheemaun ferry terminal are also freely walkable and worth an afternoon without any reservation needed. If you are visiting on a tighter budget, we recommend combining a free day at a public beach or trail with an overnight at one of the more affordable cottage areas like the Kawarthas or Township of Tiny. The morning walk to the beach from Woodward by the Beach costs nothing and is one of the most genuinely relaxing experiences on this entire list.

Tips for Visiting Ontario Cottage Country with Kids or Toddlers

Ontario cottage country is genuinely excellent with young children, but a little planning makes the difference between a relaxing trip and a stressful one. We always recommend choosing a property with a shallow lake entry or a gradual beach rather than a dock-only waterfront, especially for toddlers. The Kawarthas are our top recommendation for families with young children because the lakes are warm and the entries are typically gentle. Packing a portable baby gate for dock-access properties is something we wish someone had told us earlier. Provincial parks with supervised beaches offer a safer environment for toddlers who are new to lake swimming. For broader family activity ideas across the province, our Ontario travel guides have dedicated sections on family-friendly destinations. The Cottage by Callisto near Brighton is one of our top picks for families because of the board games, the pet-friendly setup, and the proximity to Presqu’ile Provincial Park, which has a supervised beach area. Always check whether a rental property has life jackets available or whether you need to bring your own.
