Things to Do on Pelee Island

Once you arrive, it’s time to slow down and soak in island life. Here are the top things to do on Pelee Island and must-see Pelee Island attractions:

1. Bike the Island Loop

The flat, 28 km perimeter makes for a leisurely day-long bike ride. Bring your own or rent one near the ferry terminal. Love cycling? Discover more scenic routes in our guide to wildlife in Canada for destinations where nature and outdoor adventure meet.

We rented bikes right at the ferry dock and spent the entire day pedalling the loop at our own pace. It took us about five hours with stops, and we genuinely felt the island open up the further we rode from the ferry terminal.

Bike Rentals: Available near the Pelee Island Ferry Terminal dock.

Hours: Seasonal, May to October. Confirm hours before visiting.

2. Visit Pelee Island Winery Pavilion

One of the premier Pelee Island attractions, enjoy wine tastings and scenic vineyard views. Try the island-grown Pinot Noir or Gewurztraminer.

We visited on a warm September afternoon and the tasting room was relaxed and unhurried. The Pinot Noir from the island’s own vines was a genuine surprise, and the vineyard views with Lake Erie in the background made it one of the most memorable wine stops we have done in Ontario.

Address: 20 East West Road, Pelee Island, ON N0R 1M0

Hours: Seasonal. Confirm current hours at peleeislandwinery.com before visiting.

Admission: Tasting fees apply. Confirm current pricing directly with the winery.

Parking: On-site parking available.

3. Lighthouse Point Nature Reserve

A peaceful hike through marshes and forests that ends at a charming, historic lighthouse, and possibly a Lake Erie beach all to yourself. This natural wonder ranks among the top things to do on Pelee Island.

We arrived at Lighthouse Point mid-morning and had the trail almost entirely to ourselves. The final stretch to the lighthouse opened onto a completely deserted pebble beach, and we sat there for an hour watching birds drift over the lake. It felt genuinely remote in a way that few Ontario spots do.

Address: Lighthouse Point, northern tip of Pelee Island, ON

Admission: No admission fee.

Parking: Roadside parking available near the trail entrance.

Confirm trail access conditions before visiting, as seasonal closures may apply.

Birdwatchers should also check our wildlife in Canada guide for more spots where Canadian nature puts on a genuine show.

4. Explore Vin Villa Ruins

Once the site of Canada’s first commercial winery, the Vin Villa ruins are essential Pelee Island attractions and a must-see for history buffs.

Walking through the stone archways of Vin Villa felt oddly cinematic. The ruins are well-preserved enough to understand the scale of what was once here, and reading about their history on-site added real depth to the visit.

Address: Pelee Island, ON (south end of the island, accessible by bike or car)

Admission: Free to visit.

Confirm accessibility before visiting, as conditions may vary by season.

5. Birdwatching Paradise

Spring and fall migration seasons bring thousands of birds through the island. Don’t forget your binoculars! Birdwatching is definitely one of the unique things to do on Pelee Island.

We visited in early fall and the number of species passing through was remarkable. Even without specialist knowledge, we spotted dozens of birds within an hour near the marshes. If you are a serious birder, Pelee Island during migration is a bucket-list destination.

Best locations: Lighthouse Point and Fish Point Nature Reserve.

Admission: No admission fee for most birdwatching areas.

Best seasons: Spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) migrations.

6. Beach Picnics and Lake Swims

Pack a lunch and enjoy a swim at Sunset Beach, Fish Point, or Scudder Beach.

Scudder Beach was our favourite. The water was calm and clear, the pebble shore was quiet, and it felt like a private beach. We packed snacks and stayed for two hours without any intention of moving.

Key beaches: Sunset Beach (west side), Fish Point (south end), Scudder Beach (east side).

Admission: Free.

Facilities: Limited. Bring your own food, water, and sun protection.

Where to Eat

Pelee Island Ontario has a handful of cozy cafes and eateries, mostly open seasonally. On your way back to Leamington, be sure to explore:

  • Birdie’s Perch — Double-decker bus food truck serving perch tacos
  • Freddy’s Restaurant — Mediterranean and seafood near Point Pelee
  • Burgess Refreshments — Classic diner with lakeside views

We stopped at Birdie’s Perch on the way to the ferry and the perch tacos were an absolute highlight of the trip. It is the kind of meal that would not be half as good anywhere else. For more food inspiration across the province, do not miss our roundup of top Mexican restaurants in Ontario.

Best Time to Visit Pelee Island

Spring (May to June): Spring is one of our favourite times to visit. The ferry season opens in May, the island is still uncrowded, and the bird migration is at its peak. Wildflowers are blooming across the nature reserves and the temperatures are pleasant for cycling. Expect some rain, but nothing that should put you off.

Summer (July to August): Summer is the busiest season and for good reason. The beaches are warm, the winery pavilion is in full swing, and the island has the most services running. We recommend booking your ferry and accommodation well in advance during summer weekends, as spots fill quickly.

Fall (September to October): Fall is genuinely spectacular on Pelee Island. The crowds thin, the island takes on a golden light, and the fall bird migration brings species diversity that rivals anywhere in Ontario. The winery harvest season also adds a special energy. This is the season we personally recommend most.

Winter: The ferry does not operate in winter, so the island is inaccessible to visitors. If you are drawn to a southwestern Ontario winter escape, our guide to romantic winter getaways in Ontario has some excellent alternatives.

Pelee Island Attractions by Area

  • North End (Lighthouse Point): The northern tip is where you will find Lighthouse Point Nature Reserve, a network of trails through marsh and forest leading to the historic lighthouse and a Lake Erie beach. This is the best area for birdwatching and quiet nature walks, and it is one of the first stops we recommend on a full island day.
  • Central Island (Winery and Vin Villa): The island’s centre is home to the Pelee Island Winery Pavilion and the Vin Villa Ruins. These two Pelee Island attractions are within easy cycling distance of each other and make a natural pairing for a mid-day stop. The winery pavilion has seating both indoors and outdoors with vineyard views.
  • South End (Fish Point and Scudder Beach): Fish Point Nature Reserve at the southern tip is another key birdwatching site. Scudder Beach on the east side is our preferred swimming and picnicking spot. The south end is quieter and rewards visitors who make the full loop rather than turning back at the winery.
  • West Side (Sunset Beach and Leamington Ferry Route): Sunset Beach on the western shore is the island’s most popular beach and lives up to its name. The ferry from Leamington arrives at the Pelee Island dock near the island’s central west side, making this the natural starting point for any island day.

Free and No-Reservation Things to Do on Pelee Island

One of the things we appreciate most about Pelee Island is how much is available to visitors without booking anything in advance. The beaches are free to access, the cycling loop costs nothing beyond a bike rental, and both Lighthouse Point and Fish Point nature reserves have no admission charge. We spent an entire day on the island without a single reservation and had a thoroughly complete experience.

Birdwatching is entirely free and requires no booking. You simply arrive with binoculars and walk the trails near Lighthouse Point or Fish Point. The Vin Villa Ruins are also free to visit and accessible by bike or on foot from the main road. There are no timed entry slots or booking requirements for any of the island’s natural and historic sites.

The one activity we do recommend booking is the Pelee Island Winery tasting, as the pavilion can get busy on summer weekends. The ferry crossing itself requires advance booking, especially if you are bringing a vehicle. Everything else on the island can genuinely be enjoyed on a walk-in basis, which makes Pelee Island one of the most spontaneous-friendly destinations we have visited in Ontario.

Things to Do on Pelee Island with Kids

Pelee Island is a genuinely family-friendly destination, and we have seen families with young children enjoying the island thoroughly. The flat terrain makes it easy to navigate with strollers on paved roads, and the beaches are calm enough for small children. Sunset Beach and Scudder Beach both have gentle entries into the water, with no significant waves or surf to worry about.

The bike loop is manageable for families with older children who can cycle, and bike rentals near the ferry terminal sometimes have options with child seats or trailers. We would recommend doing a shortened version of the loop with younger kids rather than the full 28 km, focusing on the winery area and one or two beaches rather than the complete circuit.

Birdwatching is a surprisingly engaging activity for children on the island. The variety of species visible even to untrained eyes makes it a real discovery experience. Bring a simple field guide and let kids check off species as they spot them. For more ideas on outdoor Ontario adventures with the family, our guide to weekend trips from Toronto covers a range of family-friendly options across the province.

Pack food and plenty of water for a day trip with kids. The island has limited dining options and the ones that are open keep seasonal hours that may not align with children’s meal times. A well-stocked cooler in the morning will save you considerably on the island.
